Training 120 teachers in Laghman

Why this project

Teachers in many rural schools in Laghman have had little or no training. Most lessons were copied from the board, and pupils in the larger classes had few chances to read aloud or ask questions.

What we did

We ran a twelve-day course on lesson planning, reading instruction, group work and checking what pupils have understood. After the course, each teacher was paired with a coach from our team, who visited their class every month, watched a lesson and planned the next steps with them.

Teachers met in small groups each term to share what was working. The best ideas were collected into a short handbook in Pashto that every teacher received.

What we learned

Coaching in the classroom made a bigger difference than the course alone. Teachers said the monthly visits gave them confidence to try new methods with large classes.

  • Primary school textbooks in Pashto spread on a table

$25 keeps a child in class for a whole term

That pays for books, a slate and a share of a local teacher's salary. Give once or every month.
