Why this project

For several years, pupils at this primary school studied in canvas tents. Classes stopped in the hottest weeks of summer and the coldest weeks of winter, and tents tore in the spring winds.

What we did

The school committee and the district education office agreed the design with us. Local builders constructed four brick classrooms with large windows, insulated roofs and wood stoves, as well as two latrine blocks with a hand-washing station.

Parents contributed labour for the foundations. Our engineer checked the work every week until it was finished.

What we learned

Hiring local builders kept costs down and meant that the community knew how to repair the buildings. We now include a small maintenance fund with every construction project.

$25 keeps a child in class for a whole term

That pays for books, a slate and a share of a local teacher's salary. Give once or every month.
