Mobile clinic reaches villages cut off by spring floods

When floods washed away a bridge in Shighnan, our mobile clinic team crossed on foot to keep their monthly visits going.

A paved road winding between rocky hills in northern Afghanistan

In late May, heavy rain and melting snow washed away a footbridge in Shighnan district, cutting off six villages from the main road.

Our mobile clinic team could no longer drive to these villages. Instead, the doctor, the midwife and the vaccinator carried medicines and equipment across the river at a shallow point and walked the last two hours.

Over three days, the team saw 412 patients. Most had diarrhoea or chest infections, which are common after floods. They also checked 36 pregnant women and vaccinated 58 children.

The district has started rebuilding the bridge. Until it is finished, our team will keep walking in on the usual monthly date, so that families know care is still coming.
